Do You Still Remember Their Faces?

"In an increasingly fast-paced world, the space for direct human interaction is being altered by the automation of transactions. The sound of self-checkouts at the supermarket is gradually replacing weekly chats with the cashier.
In this project, Jonathan Tang (1997) a visual artist whose parents run a toko, put himself behind the counter at different tokos in Amsterdam. With camera in hand, he spoke with shoppers about their customs at their favourite toko.
As part of these encounters, he captured portraits of the shoppers. Tang then printed these using a receipt printer. Human interaction fades into the background as a result. All that remains is a vague portrait, drowned out by the digital sales transaction.”
